The current recession has affected all of us in some way or another. We all know of a friend or family member who has just lost a job and can no longer meet their financial obligations. This is a serious worldwide problem and it is here to stay for quite sometime. A considerable large amount of people are applying for credit and more people are being refused! A well known bank recently announced that they were rejecting about 50% of credit card applications.

By understanding your credit report and score you will be able to understand how lenders view your report and manage your current or future credit applications. You will realize how important it is to keep your accounts up to date. If you are struggling with your repayments you should always talk to your lender.

When you are applying for a loan or credit, a lender will look at your credit report, plus all the information from your application form and generate a credit score. This score predicts the risk involved in granting you credit. Each lender has a different formula in determing your credit score, and will change depending on the type of credit you are applying for. Every credit report can generate a different credit score. A credit score is used to determine how likely you are to repay a loan and make the repayments on time. The scoring system ranges from 0 to 999, the higher your score the easier it will be for you to apply for a loan or credit. That is why it so important to know your credit score, as you can then start improving it. A credit report and score changes over time, as with your information on your credit history and on your credit applications forms.

Lenders do not have to tell you how they work out your credit score, but they should give you a basic explanation on how their scoring works. They should also tell you whether your application has been refused because of your credit score and whether that involves the information on your credit report.

A credit report allows lenders to evaluate how much they will borrow to their clients and lets good borrowers benefit from cheaper lending ! Your credit score will affect the rate you are offered on a loan, credit card and mortgage.

Every aspect of your life is affected by your credit rating. Where you live, where you work, what car your drive, the cell phone you own, and the places where you shop are all impacted by your credit report and your credit ranking. It can be humiliating to have your credit denied or to lose a credit service or card even if you are paying on them because your score has caused the rates to climb out of your ability pay them. So much is affected by your credit that it is better to find ways to improve your credit history problems and to work on your credit in order to have a more promising future.

The first step is to get a copy of your credit report as soon as possible. You can contact any of the three large credit report agencies (CRAs) in the USA for the report. Equifax, Experian (formerly known as TRW), and Trans Union are the largest CRAs in the United States. You can ask for your credit report from them for free if you have been turned down for credit in the last 60 days, you are unemployed and want to look for work within the next 60 days, or if you have legitimate reason to believe your report is inaccurate due to fraud. Normally these companies charge a fee of up to $9.00 for a copy of your report. There are also places online where you can access all or portions of your report for free. If you find information that is incorrect you have the legal right to challenge the information in writing. When you write to a CRA to get information corrected use professional language and be courteous. CRAs handle a few hundred million credit users and your claim will look more realistic if you are rational and polite
when you make your dispute.

Other ways to improve your credit history involve dealing with the credit you have now. Pay off your credit cards as soon as possible. If you are facing a high balance on an account, call and see if you can get the interest rate reduced so the monthly payment is not so high. If you cannot pay off the account in full, work at paying off more than just the minimum due each month so you can improve your history with them. Call all the creditors you have and ask for a better interest rate.

Cancel all the accounts you do not need. Excessive accounts drive you debt ratio too high. In other words, it looks to potential creditors as if you already have too many accounts to pay off. If you have more credit than income they will not want to offer you any more credit.

Keep an eye out for any unauthorized use of your credit or cards. This can mean identity theft or companies making unauthorized charges that you did not agree to on your accounts. This vigilance will pay off when you want to own a home or buy a new car.

Anytime you apply for credit in the United States of America, a mortgage, or for certain jobs, your credit report and score will be checked. If you ask yourself ‘how does my credit report affect me?’ you should understand that almost every day you use some form of credit and these transactions are being recorded. There are three large credit reporting agencies in the United States. Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union are the companies that sell your information to lenders who want to know if they can trust you with a line of credit. When you apply for an apartment rental, a government job, or you want to get mortgage, incidents from your past that seemed small at the time might come back to haunt you in the form of a credit score that is too low or as something that might set off alarms for whoever asked to see the report.

When you ask “how does my credit report affect me?” you should understand that certain things on your report can trigger an alarm besides just having a low credit score. Whenever you apply for credit the lender will ask for the report and ask you for information to find out what is going on with your credit history. One of the things that might affect your credit report is certain types of inquiries. Pre-approved credit offers, your request to see your report, and employment screenings will not affect your credit history. Inquiries that will affect your credit report are those that include mortgages, car loans, or bank loans. These will ‘pull’ your credit report, and for each pull your score can dip roughly 5 points. One or two inquiries are not enough to really affect your score, but it can still hurt especially if you try to get several loans at one time. If you rate shop when looking for the best deal for something like a car loan however, then as long as all of the inquires occur within 30 days this will
not affect your credit score the same way.

Something as serious as an eviction will appear on your credit score as well. Getting evicted is most often the end result of a fairly long financial and legal battle. The eviction is, in fact, a ‘no win’ situation for both the renter and the landlord but the judgment will appear on your credit negatively. Rent is thought of legally as a sort of short term ‘month to month’ type or credit that needs to be paid in a timely manner. An eviction therefore is a form of repossession of property for the nonpayment of a loan. This will be damaging when you are looking for an apartment. Landlords screen reports showing this type of history. It can also cause trouble when you are applying for utility service.

Besides checking your report carefully for mistakes, you should also look for ways to raise your score to mitigate as much as possible the negatives on your report.

If you are ever denied credit, insurance, or even employment in the USA, and it is due to information that was supplied by a credit reporting agency (CRA); then you have a limited amount of time to request a free report from this agency. If you are wondering how to get a copy of your credit report, you should know that the company who made the initial request for your report must provide the name of the CRA it used along with its address and telephone number.

If you contact the CRA within 60 days of receiving a denial notification then the report is free. You are also entitled under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) to one free copy of your report a year if you can prove that you are unemployed and will be looking for a job within 60 days, that you are on welfare, or that your report is inaccurate because of fraud A CRA might otherwise charge up to $9.00 for a copy of the report.

It is very important that you find out the cause if you are denied credit. If you ever want to own a house or have an emergency and need credit, having an unresolved issued on your credit report can come back to haunt you. You need to get a copy of your report and check it for any inconsistencies or mistakes.

If it turns out that there is a mistake on your credit report you must contact the CRA in writing regarding the information that you believe is incorrect. It is a good idea to include copies (never originals) of documents that can support your position. Remember to include all the details that will identify you such as your complete name and address. List all the problems you see with the report along with the correct information. Use polite, but not familiar language. Request that they delete the false information. Including a copy of the report with the items you dispute circled is also a good idea.

By law, the CRAs must reinvestigate the items you dispute within about 30 days. They are also required to forward all relevant information about the dispute to the source of the information. If the initial information proves to be incorrect the CRA must notify all nationwide CRAs so that everyone has the correct information. After a dispute has been resolved, it is wise to get another copy of your credit report to make sure that everything is correct.

It is possible that you might have to do a little research through your own records and bank files to find the information, but it is well worth the effort to repair a mistake on your credit report. Your credit ranking number and credit history weigh heavily on your financial security, and should be taken seriously.

If you have at some point or the other, applied for a credit card or had a line of credit there is a credit report on file about you. This report has information on how you have paid your bills, where you work, and whether you have been sued, filed for bankruptcy, or arrested. In the United States of America the companies that sell this information are called CRAs or Consumer Reporting Agencies. The most common company that sells this information is a credit bureau. This information is of interest to anyone you might want to get credit from such as landlords, credit card companies, insurers, and employers. There are three large CRAs in America, Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union.

The information in your credit report is so important to your financial future in the U.S. that the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) makes it legally possible for you to see your report. The FCRA lets you see what type of information is on a credit report filed in your name. This means you have a right to ask anyone who is reporting on your credit for a copy of this information. You are also entitled to know who has requested your report within the last two years. If an adverse action has been taken against you based on your report such as denying you credit, insurance, or employment; you have a right to request a copy of this report within 60 days of receiving a notice of credit denial. The notice you receive should have the name, phone number and address of the CRA that sent you the information.

There are four sections on a credit report. You need to read each section carefully and understand how the information is listed.

The report will list basic information about you. Look this information over carefully because mistakes can be made and should be taken seriously. The information will include your name, social security number, birth date, employer, and spouse’s name. The credit reporting agency might also provide information on your home ownership, income, employment history, and previous addresses depending on what the creditor requests.

In the section on payment history, you will see that all your creditors are listed. These listings will show how much credit has been extended to you and how much you have paid back in a timely manner.

There is a section in the report for anything that is in the public record. Events such as bankruptcies, tax liens, foreclosures, and other issues that are a matter of public record can be found here.

‘Inquiries’ is a section that lists all instances of requests for your credit report in the last two years. If you find incorrect information you should contact the credit reporting agency immediately to get this corrected. Incorrect information can damage your chances of getting the credit you need.

Your credit report is your history. It is the only history someone you need credit from wants to see. All of your financial actions are listed on this report. If you have had any situations in the past where you paid late, or failed to make payment on a debt; the information is in your credit report. It is a good idea to obtain a copy of your credit report and to review it at least once a year. If the score is not what it should be, you should work at bringing your credit report score up. Learning how to read and understand your credit report can be very important to your financial security.

When you first get a copy of your credit report in the USA it is normal to want to check the credit score and pay little attention to the rest of the report. It is very important, however, to pay attention to all the information the report contains. Make sure your name is spelled correctly; verify your social security number and birth date. Mix ups can occur and if someone has gained access to your information and is using it fraudulently for the purpose of identity theft this is a key sign of this activity.

Next you will see the credit summary which reports information about the types of accounts you have currently. Here a lender can see the number, balance, and status of the accounts you have. It shows real estate accounts and mortgages you owe, revolving accounts like credit cards, lines of credit, installment accounts such as loans, and accounts that have gone to collection.

The next section is account history. Specific information on accounts you have can be found here. Creditor names, account names, account types, responsibilities, monthly payments, dates the accounts were opened, dates the accounts were reported to the credit agency, and balances owed are all listed. You will also find the credit limit or loan amount and if the account is a credit card you will find the highest and lowest amounts you have charged on the card. Past due amounts will be reported and any remarks a creditor has added to your account. Current payment status and your payment history can also be found here. This is not where you find information about accounts sent to an agency for collection.

The next section is public records, and this section will include information like bankruptcies, tax liens, late child support payments, or judgments. A public record usually stays on the report for seven years. Only the financial problems or crimes show up in this part of the report.

The last section shows credit inquiries. Here you will find a list of all parties who have requested a copy of your credit report for the last two years.

You should definitely obtain a copy of your credit report if you are planning to make a major purchase, believe your identity might have been stolen, or when you are denied credit.

Your financial security depends on how others see your credit history. When you apply for a home loan you will not be given a chance to explain that you tried to make a car payment, but were late due to a banking error. All that will matter is what can be seen on the credit report. If you find yourself wondering at times “what is a credit report used for?”; you should understand that when you need credit, lenders will seek information from credit reporting agencies. Your dreams could be forestalled if your credit score is not what it should be.

Your credit report will reveal if you own your home, how many times you might have moved, how well you pay your bills, how much credit you have, what types of credit are available to you at this time, and whether you have ever been arrested, sued, or filed for bankruptcy.

In the United States of America the information is collected, organized, and stored on large databases by three large credit reporting bureaus. In the United States, your credit report will be sold to your lender by one of the following: Equifax, Experian, or Trans Union.

Many different lenders or companies who are interested in your credit history will want to buy this information from the credit reporting agencies. If you want to rent an apartment or building, the person taking your rental application will want your credit history to see if you will pay rent on time. If you want insurance, insurance companies will also want to know if you will pay on time. Credit card companies need to know if you are a good risk as a client, and even employers want to know if you have been sued or have financial issues. Other businesses might want to know your credit history before offering your special deals, and of course when you want to buy a home, the mortgage company will need to see your credit report.

To understand what a credit report is used for, think of the information lenders want to see as broken down into four types. They want to know who you are exactly. This means your name, any names you might have gone by in the past, current and former addresses, social security number, year of birth, and former employers will be in the report. The report will also give them your credit information including where you have bank accounts, stores where you have credit, credit card issues, utility companies you use, and other lenders. The report will also have public record information such as state and county records regarding tax liens, bankruptcy, or judgments against you. Lastly, it will let the lender know if you have been making inquiries and will give the names of those companies who have been looking at your credit report within the last two years.

Credit reporting agencies collect this information from everyone who has given you credit in the past. It is the lender who makes the decision whether or not to give you a loan or line of credit; the credit reporting agency only assesses your credit.

At some point in your life, you might have a dream or goal that can only be realized by getting the credit you need. So much of your financial security depends on having a good rating that you should work toward having the best score possible. You should order a copy of your report and take a careful look at it. In the USA tt is possible to obtain a copy of your report online. Where you get your report is not as important as what you do with the information. If you cannot readily make sense of what you are seeing then you need to learn how to understand your credit report.

The mistake many frustrated consumers make is to look only at the credit score ranking. When they see the score, they think the three numbers of their credit report score is all there is to their credit worthiness. There is more to your credit score than just the ranking. Two examples demonstrate how a company might view your history. In the first example, you have several credit cards, a car loan, and a mortgage all of which you pay on time. A company might still refuse you a large amount of credit because paying it back along with all your other obligations would put you in too much debt. In the second example, you only have one credit card. You pay it off carefully, but while this gives you a good ranking it does not really tell a lender how you might deal with multiple loans or larger loans. In the first case, your credit would seem ‘too deep’ while in the second your credit would be seen as ‘too shallow’.

Part of learning how to understand your credit report is to study it carefully. Poor credit scores are seen as 300-399, fair is 400-599, good credit is 600-849, and a score of 850-930 is a very good credit as far as rankings go. It is only natural to look at this first, but the rest of the report is just as important. Take a few minutes to make sure the information at the top is correct. It should have your name, current address, social security number, and your date of birth. If you are married it should include your spouse’s information if you have joint accounts or use credit together. Do not just glance at this information; diligently make sure it is correct. A mistake here can cause trouble later, and if there is some discrepancy in the address, name, or date of birth it could indicate that someone other than you might be using your credit. This is called identity theft.

The next section is a summary that shows your scores from all three credit bureaus and your late payment history for the last 24 months. The next section shows public actions such as bankruptcies and liens taken against you.

One more important aspect to note is the Credit Risk Score which explains your score reporting at length. This will give details such as having too many credit inquiries in the last 12 months’, or having too many open accounts.

A point comes in everyone’s life when they will need credit. Perhaps it comes during a financial crisis, but most often it comes from a desire to fulfill a dream. You might want to buy a boat, a car, or a home. These wants create a need for loans and mortgages, credit cards, and lines of credit. In the United States of America when you apply for credit, the business you request the loan or line of credit from will ask you for information about your credit history. Next, this business will turn to another company that will collect all your financial data, compare your history with other consumers, and give you a credit score ranking. If you have ever asked yourself “where do credit reports come from?”, then you should know they come from these companies who make it their job to collect and organize the credit scores of everyone who uses credit.

You cannot really expect companies to simply hand you credit. There must be some introduction to your history for them that involves knowing how you have dealt with banks, finance companies, or other agencies in the past. Your credit report will show your prior credit activities, such as whether or not you have taken out any loans or lines of credit in the past. This report will also show if any actions have been taken against you for late or unpaid bills.

The business or banking institution you go to for credit will take the information you have given them such as your name, address, place of employment, and social security number, and they will pay another company to find out the information they need to know about you. This company, known as a consumer reporting agency (CRA), will provide the lender with information that has been gathered and stored on a large database. CRAs began to collect information on you as soon as you started using credit. This history is extremely important to anyone who is thinking of extending you credit.

If someone told you that they had taken a look at your financial credit score, and you wondered where the score came from; chances are good that the information came from one of three CRAs. Equifax Inc, Experian, and TransUnion are the three largest American agencies who maintain and gather information on consumer credit holders. If this sounds like a big job, it is. They have records on over 500 million credit holders worldwide.

If you have ever used credit anywhere, you should take a look at your credit report. It is a good idea to know your credit score and to work on it if it is poor. You also want to be sure there are no errors on your report. Because of the huge volume of data collected on credit holders, it is possible for mistakes to be made. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act passed into American federal law in 1970 you have a right to ask CRAs for a copy of your report if you are turned down for a line of credit or a loan.

If you feel that you are paying your bills on time, you might not see why you would need to check out what is on your own credit history. There are, in fact, a few good reasons that you might want to ask “Why do I need a Credit Report?” and feel justified in asking the question. There may come a time in your life when you have a business or personal opportunity, and you will need credit. It is also possible that you will need credit during an emergency. A problem on your credit report that you were unaware of could have an impact on your ability to get credit during these times, or at any other time. Knowing your credit score and how to improve your credit ranking is an important step to take to ensure your financial security.

Banks and other business look for certain credit report rankings and other indicators before extending you credit. If you are wondering “Why do I need a Credit Report?” think of the day when you would like to own a home, buy a new car, or land the job of your dreams. It is entirely possible that a poor credit ranking could prevent you from reaching these goals.

In the USA there are several large credit reporting agencies that are frequently used by businesses to check on your credit. These businesses want to see who has extended credit to you in the past, how much credit you have been extended, whether you paid regularly, if you were ever penalized for late payments, and if you ever failed to pay. These factors are calculated and averaged against other consumer’s credit to find your credit ranking. Lenders will also look at whether you have ever declared bankruptcy, how much debt you have outstanding currently compared to your credit limits, how long have you been receiving credit, if you have applied for more credit than usual lately, and how many credit accounts you have. Some of these factors have scores of their own such as how much debt do you have outstanding currently compared to your credit limits? If you owe more than you make or can pay back in a reasonable amount of time already, this will negatively affect your score and might keep you from getting the credit you want.

It is important to see your credit report to find out where you stand credit wise, and to know your credit ranking as well. This ranking is changeable depending on how careful you are in obtaining, using, and repaying credit. You can bring your score up by using your credit to your own advantage.

You also need to check your credit report to make sure there are no unpleasant surprises. You want to make sure no one has made a mistake and not given you credit for paying them back. You also want to be sure that no one is using your credit fraudulently without your knowledge as is the case with identity theft. Getting a copy of your credit report and understanding the information in it can help to ensure your future.
